WESTGATE DRIVE, RIVER OAKS - HOUSTON TX

Interior Designers Houston

A house on Westgate Drive in Houston's River Oaks neighborhood is distinctive for its long, narrow silhouette and Modern Neoclassical architecture.
Entering the house from the front door, a light and airy foyer greets visitors with a vaulted ceiling, a marble tile floor, and a staircase to the second story. The marble tile floor is white with pale gray veining and is laid out in a chevron pattern. The walls are white with black trim. The ceiling is two stories high and is white with white panel molding and recessed lighting. There are large, black trimmed windows lining the walls just below the ceiling. The staircase is striking in black and white. The stringers are white; treads, risers, landing, handrails, spindles and newels are all black.
The foyer connects to a long hall with a high white ceiling embellished with white panel molding and recessed lighting. A right turn into the hall leads to an elevator at the front end of the hall. Turning left from the foyer leads to the main part of the marble tiled hall which is lined with floor to ceiling windows and glass doors on the left side, leading to the patio and swimming pool in the backyard.
A few steps down the hallway, a doorway to the right leads to a bar, a pantry, and a half-bathroom. The bar has the same marble tile flooring as the hall. The walls and ceiling are white. Black cabinets topped with a black marble countertop form an "L" on two walls. Upper cabinets, also black, fill the wall on the short side of the "L" and half the wall on the long side of the "L". The backsplash is a striking dark cobalt blue, penny round mosaic tile. A small black sink with chrome tap is installed in the short counter. A contemporary pendant light is suspended from the ceiling.
The half-bathroom has white walls with black accents. Black marble tile floors and accent wall match the black marble vanity with gray veining. A tall, white vessel sink sits on the vanity with a tall, modern, gold-tone faucet curving over the top of it. An interior designer might add a vase of fresh flowers on the counter for a pop of color.
On the right, the hall opens to a cased doorway leading to the living room. The marble tile flooring and high ceiling with panel molding continues in this room. Walls and ceiling are white. Baseboards, doorways, and window trim are black. A black fireplace, as well as the section of wall surrounding it, is framed in black trim. Two windows flank the fireplace area. The neutral black and white palette allows an interior designer to choose furniture and accessories from a variety of colors and styles.
The living room flows naturally to the kitchen via a cased doorway. The same marble tile that is in the hallway and living room is also in the kitchen. The high ceiling is white with recessed lights. One wall holds black, built-in cabinets above and below a black granite countertop in which an electric cooktop is installed. The backsplash behind the cooktop is white marble tile. Another wall holds more black cabinetry with a sink mounted in the black granite countertop. A window behind the sink is covered with a pale gray Roman shade. Kitchen appliances are hidden behind cabinet doors. The kitchen features two islands, both painted black with black granite waterfall countertops. One is a work island with a sink; the other is a breakfast island with room for four chairs. Five hanging geometric teardrop pendant lights are centered over the breakfast island. An interior designer might add some potted herbs and a bowl of lemons and limes to add a pop of color to the black cabinetry and countertops.
The dining room is located across the hall from the kitchen. The flooring in this room is marble tile in a chevron pattern, similar to the foyer flooring. It features a black accent wall and a black recessed ceiling with a gold metal linear chandelier suspended from the center of it. An interior designer would probably choose a contemporary table and chairs with simple lines to accent the drama of the room. Behind the black recessed ceiling, the ceiling and walls are white. There are recessed lights in both sections of the ceiling. Tall windows on two walls let in natural light.
A wide, cased doorway leads from the dining room to the library. This room has a dark hardwood floor and a deep cobalt blue ceiling and walls. Two walls are completely lined with built-in bookshelves painted the same deep cobalt as the ceiling. Recessed lights are installed in the ceiling, and several adjustable-arm wall lamps with brass shades are affixed to the tops of the bookcases, hanging over the side in a ninety-degree angle to shine on the books below. French doors opening to the back of the house, with windows above reaching to the ceiling, are centered in the back wall of the room. There is a walk-in closet in this room and a bathroom nearby, allowing an interior designer to convert it to a bedroom with minimal inconvenience if needed.
A bedroom is located down a short hall, and past a bathroom, from the library. This room has a dark hardwood floor and a tray ceiling. The walls are painted a medium shade of gray which is repeated on the inside edge of the white ceiling. The room has black baseboards, black-trimmed French doors opening to the backyard, and a black ceiling fan centered above the room. Pale gray Roman shades on the French doors offer privacy when needed. Lighting is recessed. The neutral color palette in this room allows a lot of latitude in colors and interior design styles.
The master suite is on the second floor of the house. The bedroom is spacious with white walls and a white ceiling. A small black accent wall encases a large black fireplace. The black paint extends to a strip of ceiling, the same width as the accent wall, and across the room to the opposite wall. The ceiling holds recessed lights and a black ceiling fan. Natural light fills the room from two walls containing windows and a set of French doors that give access to a balcony. An alcove outside the entrance to the room-sized closet holds a small refrigerator and black painted storage cupboards and drawers perfect for creating a coffee and snack area. The flooring in the bedroom is dark hardwood placed in a chevron pattern. In the alcove, the dark hardwood floor is laid in the traditional manner. The neutral color palette allows an interior designer to fill it with bright colors, muted tones or layered neutral shades.
The primary bathroom is nearly as large as the bedroom. The floor in this room is white marble tile with gray veining. Instead of a traditional vanity, there is a long, solid, rectangular counter that is lower than usual for a vanity. Two tall vessel sinks with tall, gold-toned faucets curving over their tops sit on top of this counter. A glass enclosed, multiple-head shower is behind the counter, with one long glass wall forming the back wall of the vanity/counter. A small mirror is affixed to the glass wall above each sink. Opposite the vanity/counter is a black painted built-in makeup vanity with shelves and drawers, a padded stool, and a mirror flanked by modern curved LED bar sconces. Many interior design styles would recommend the placement of living plants on the black shelves to add energy and a bit of vibrant color to the space. The room opens up past the far end of the vanity/counter to a light-filled area with marble tile floor and walls. A soaking tub sits against the far wall in the sunlight from two windows. A modern, black-shaded pendant light is suspended from the ceiling. The balcony is floored with deep gray porcelain stoneware tiles and overlooks the swimming pool.
There are three secondary bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms on the second floor of the house. Bedroom #1 has a dark hardwood floor, white walls and a white tray ceiling with recessed lighting. A black ceiling fan is centered over the room. This bedroom is large enough to hold a full-size bed, a small desk and a settee without feeling crowded. A large window on one wall allows natural light to fill the room. Most interior design styles would work with the architectural features and neutral palette of this room.
Bathroom #1 Has white walls with black baseboards and trim, a white ceiling, and a small white vanity with black hardware. The vanity countertop is black marble with gray veining and holds a rectangular undermount sink with gold taps. A black-framed rectangular mirror is hung vertically above the vanity. The mirror is flanked by modern linear gold-tone sconces. The walk-in shower walls are light gray ceramic tile. The shower floor is light gray porcelain tile with three rows of black tile forming three stripes that extend from the floor, up the wall of the shower to the ceiling. The shower head and all other shower and sink hardware are gold-tone metal.
Bedroom #2 has white walls with black baseboards, a white tray ceiling with recessed lights and a black ceiling fan, and dark hardwood floor. Two windows on one wall let in the Houston sunshine.
Bathroom #2 has a long white vanity with black hardware, a rectangular undermount sink and gold faucet. A black framed, rectangular mirror hangs above the vanity. The walk-in shower is tiled in dark gray subway tile in a chevron pattern.
Bedroom #3 is the largest of the secondary bedrooms. It has dark hardwood floors, pale gray walls, and a pale gray tray ceiling. Recessed lights and a black ceiling fan are installed in the ceiling. The room is spacious enough to accommodate a king-size bed, dressers, bookshelves, a seating area, and a desk while still feeling roomy. This bedroom has a walk-in closet, ensuite bathroom, and five large windows on two walls, allowing natural light to flood the room, a goal of many interior design styles.
Bathroom #3 has white walls and ceiling, a white vanity with black hardware, and a rectangular undermount sink with gold faucet. The combination bathtub and shower has white subway tile walls in a ninety-degree herringbone pattern and gold-tone hardware. A black-framed rectangular mirror flanked by modern linear sconces hangs over the vanity. The toilet is located between the vanity and the bathtub. A black-trimmed window above the toilet allows natural light into the room. An interior design style that embraces vintage chic would work well here.
Other upstairs rooms include a laundry room and a family room. The family room is located in an open area approximately halfway along the hall, with the primary suite and one secondary bedroom on one side of it and the other two secondary bedrooms and laundry room on the other side. This room has dark hardwood floors, white walls with black baseboards, a white ceiling with recessed lights and crown molding, and a wall of windows. This room is spacious enough to hold sofas and chairs, a game table, and a separate homework area. An interior designer would enjoy working their magic in this space.
This spacious, contemporary home is filled with light and exudes warmth, welcome and comfort.
